Irving Materials has adopted CarbonCure’s recycling technology at 15 ready-mix concrete plants in the US in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint.
CarbonCure says the technology will allow Irving Materials to save 25 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) for every pound of concrete it produces.
The technology injects recycled post-industrial CO2 into concrete during the manufacturing process. The CO2 undergoes a mineralisation process which is expected to improve the concrete’s compressive strength.
Jeff McPherson, vice president sales & marketing at Irving Materials, says: “CarbonCure enables us to produce the same high-quality concrete that our customers have relied on us to provide for the past seven decades, but now with a reduced environmental impact.”
In 2017, Irving Materials started using CarbonCure's technology at its Whiteland plant in Indiana, where it conducted extensive testing. The company then installed the technology at three plants in November 2018, which will be followed by a further installation at 11 plants in early 2019. Developers and contractors will be able to access concrete made with recycled CO2 from select locations by early Spring.
Irving Materials operates 155 active ready-mix concrete plants across Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio.
