NSSGA offers operations tour of Vulcan and Cemex facilities

January 24, 2018

The National Sand & Gravel Association is offering attendees of the AGG1 & Annual Convention an opportunity to expand their horizons with a tour of two of its member locations. It will focus on transporting aggregates through featuring Vulcan Materials (Vulcan) Houston Yard and Cemex’s Navigation Facility.

Vulcan’s Houston Ship Yard is an aggregates distribution operation based in Houston Texas. It provides high-quality construction materials to the city’s market with construction aggregates deliveries made via Panamax-class self-unloading vessels from Vulcan’s Calica Quarry situated in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

Vulica Shipping, a Houston-based subsidiary of Vulcan, operates three Panamax ships specifically designed to service the supply chain of high-quality construction materials from Mexico to the United States. The Houston Ship Yard is a key outlet for the limestone products manufactured at Vulcan’s Calica Quarry.

Cemex’s Aggregates Distribution Yard provides high-quality construction materials to the greater Houston area and is located around three miles east of downtown Houston along the banks of Buffalo Bayou and upstream from the Houston Ship Channel.

The construction aggregates are delivered by train from the company’s Balcones Quarry in New Braunfels, Texas. It is recognized by the U.S. Geological Survey as the nation’s top producing crushed stone quarry and the Houston area is a key market for the crushed and washed limestone produced at the quarry. The limestone delivered the yard and distributed to internal external clients for the greater Houston construction market.

Additionally, Cemex also manufactures ready-mix concrete at this site and runs a barge loading facility as needed for transporting aggregates.
