The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) has recognised two quarries for sustainable practices through the Platinum Award of Excellence for Community Relations Awards.
Sullivan Road Gravel Plant, a Central Pre-Mix operation in Spokane Valley, Washington, received the award for raising $11,000 for the Corporate United Way Fund Drive Campaign. The CRH company also built homes for those in need as part of a Habitat for Humanity build and used mixer trucks to block off intersections to improve safety for the 2018 Lilac Bloomsday Run. It also received the Two Stars of Excellence award for earning Gold Awards in Community Relations and Environmental Excellence within five years.
Gainesville Quarry - a Lehigh Hanson operation in Georgia - received the award for minimising waste through planning, careful selection of vendors and a recycling programme. Stormwater and water used by the operation to minimise dust were recycled and reused daily while a 59-acre former operation was used for water storage and treatment. The quarry also installed computer software, sensors and cameras to monitor all aspects of the production line.
NSSGA CEO Michael W. Johnson says: “A good community relations program is key to educating their communities about the importance of aggregates, the focus on safety with which our member companies operate each day and the lengths to which quarries are stewards of the environment.”
NSSGA also annually presents Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards of Excellence to sand and gravel operations and quarries across the US.
