Bucks Country residents attended a meeting following the discovery of asbestos at the Rockhill Quarry in Pennsylvania.
A report by 69 WFMZ-TV News says congressman Brian Fitzpatrick and local representatives Steve Santarsiero and Craig Staats hosted the town hall at Bucks Community College.
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) closed the quarry following the discovery of asbestos.
Hanson Aggregates owns the quarry and reportedly issued the following statement:
"Naturally occurring asbestos in the rock does not indicate unsafe levels in the air and there are no indications that the employees or surrounding community were at risk."
Residents also raised concerns about whether quarry met regulatory requirements to operate, the report adds.
"I will be working daily to make sure that the DEP does in fact do what it should do and enforce the law in Pennsylvania as it exists right now," says Santasiero.
Fitzpatrick has asked governor Tom Wolf to suspend development at the Rockhill Quarry until a further environmental review is conducted.
