The US Senate has approved a reauthorisation of the Water Resources and Development Act (WRDA). According to the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA), the decision was made by a vote of 99-1, and then sent to the president's desk.
The NSSGA says the bipartisan package will grow the economy, keep communities safe, cut red tape and is fiscally responsible. Additionally, it will provide certainty for aggregates producers and the equipment manufacturers who support them as they rely on the movement of goods through ports and inland waterways. Also, aggregates producers will deliver stone, sand and gravel to build water transportation infrastructure, drinking water and wastewater infrastructure.
John Barrasso, chairman of the Senate environment and public works committee, says: “America needs comprehensive water infrastructure legislation that will cut Washington red tape, create jobs, and keep communities safe."
The Highway Materials Group has expressed its support of the legislation in a letter sent to the Senate Office.
“Maintaining a two-year cycle of WRDA authorisation is critical for the long-term planning, maintenance and improvements of America’s locks, dams, harbours, ports, waterways, flood protection, and similar resources and infrastructure. Passing this bill provides certainty for communities and industries that rely on maritime infrastructure.”
