Council members in Williamsburg, Virginia, have voted to oppose a planned limestone quarry, according to the South Strand News.
The move follows growing opposition from the public to the quarry planned for the Earles community, near Andrews. Residents were concerned that wells would go dry and that house foundations would be cracked. Other concerns included possible river contamination.
Councilman Jonathan Miller, who attended previous meetings with people concerned about the mine, made a motion that council oppose any quarry in the Earles community and seek consultation on how to protect the County Council's position against quarries in Williamsburg. The motion was seconded and the seven-member board voted to approve it.
It is understood that Clark Wooten, the man behind the proposed mine, was at the meeting but did not address council. His company, RDA LLC, bought 800 acres in Williamsburg for more than $3m in early December.
