A new heavy rig-mounted breaker is helping a company carry out a major rock excavation project.
The RX46 breaker from Chicago Pneumatic is being used by Ballut Blocks, one of Malta’s largest civil engineering contractors, to meet challenging productivity targets on the project, which involves the excavation of 1 million m3 of rock over a period of four years without the use of explosives.
With a service weight of 3,000kg, the RX46 breaker is one of the largest ever used on the island of Malta. It was supplied by Swaey Bros, a company that has been

“In addition, like all Chicago Pneumatic products, it features robust construction to ensure that it has a long life even in tough operating conditions, and it is easy to maintain and service.”
Chicago Pneumatic says that key benefits of the RX-series breakers from Chicago Pneumatic include a power boost feature that harnesses recoil energy to achieve greater breaking performance without requiring additional hydraulic input; energy efficient gas/oil hybrid technology, and advanced noise and vibration damping technology. In addition, for even greater durability in demanding applications, the latest models include a reinforced breaker box design with rock claws.
“We’ve been using breakers from Chicago Pneumatic for more than five years, and we are very happy with them. They’re reliable and durable, and they require very little maintenance. And, on the few occasions when we have needed parts and assistance, we’ve had an excellent response from both Chicago Pneumatic and Swaey Bros,” says Paul Vella, managing director of Ballut Blocks.
Ballut Blocks has now been using its new RX46 breaker for several months, the company says not only has it fully lived up to expectations, it has also delivered an unexpected but very welcome bonus.
“Analysis of the fuel usage by the carrier to which the breaker is attached has shown that this has fallen by 5% since the RX46 has been in use, in spite of the new breaker’s greater productivity,” says Ballut Blocks.
Ballut Blocks was formed in 1951, and is one of the earliest companies to be established in the local building and construction industry.
Over the years the company has expanded, from the production of concrete blocks to the manufacture of all types of prefabricated concrete products and to the formation of a comprehensive fleet of specialised equipment for earthmoving, rock cutting and other civil engineering works. Many of these products and services were first introduced in Malta by Ballut Blocks whose main office is at its quarry at Wied Filep at the limits of Naxxar.
