In 2012, the Austrian cement industry saw sales remain stable with 4.46 million tonnes, compared to 4.43 million tonnes in 2011, according to the association of the Austrian cement industry VÖZ.

The industry is increasingly facing price pressure. Turnover dropped by 4.7% to €375 million and this is attributed to the fact that different types of cement are being demanded and sold at different prices.

Cement manufacturers are also struggling against competition, whereby cement is supplied more cheaply from Turkey and Germany.

In 2012, restructuring contributions amounted to €2.4 million, green-electricity costs stood at €2.5 million and €1.1 million went towards other energy tax.

VÖZ has pointed to the adverse effect of the reduction of CO2 emission certificates.

In civil engineering and in structural engineering, the cement industry grew by 4.1% and by 7.7% respectively. In Austria, some 37,000 to 38,000 flats are built each year, and in light of the rising housing prices the cement industry would like to see the figure reach 50,000
