Highways England has agreed a deal with leading UK contractors potentially worth up to £3.3 billion to enable the company to respond more quickly when motorways and major A roads need to be resurfaced.

A total of 11 companies have been signed up, with four contractors allocated to each geographical area. The chosen firms are: 1707 Aggregate Industries UK, 894 Breedon Bow Highways, 643 CEMEX Construction Services, 402 Colas Ltd, 4616 Eurovia Infrastructure Ltd, FM 2949 Conway, 5787 Galliford Try Infrastructure Ltd, 1343 Hanson Contracting, Huyton Asphalt Ltd, 868 Tarmac Trading Ltd and Toppesfield Ltd.

Highways England’s executive director of operations, Nick Harris, said: “This new arrangement will help us tackle uneven road surfaces faster, in a more cost effective and efficient way – keeping journeys safer and offering smoother journeys for the millions of drivers who use our roads every day.”

The deal means that, over the next four years, Highways England can award contracts to address poor road surfaces across England’s motorway and major A roads without having to go through lengthy bidding processes to get the work done.

The new agreement will see Tarmac Trading Ltd deliver pavement maintenance and support major new projects across five regional areas including the North East, North West, Midlands, East and South East.

Paul Fleetham, managing director of Tarmac Contracting, said: “We’re delighted to be awarded a place on this framework which is a reflection of our proven experience and outstanding track record of sustainable and efficient project delivery.  It’s also testament to the expertise of our people and the trust our customers have in Tarmac’s ability to consistently provide cost-effective, first-class road construction and maintenance services.

“We are looking forward to continuing our excellent working relationship with Highways England and its supply chain, drawing on our capabilities to deliver high-quality projects across the strategic road network that will minimise disruption, deliver value for money and prioritise the safety of team members and road users.”
