A new weighbridge operator apprenticeship has been launched for the UK quarrying, minerals and mining sectors.

Training and assessment provider MP Skills, which is organising the apprenticeship, says that weighbridge operating is often a traditional entry route to starting employment in the sectors.

The apprenticeship is designed to equip apprentices with the skills and knowledge required by employers, including working at a satellite weighbridge or as part of a 24/7 shift operation. It also delivers the MPQC Weighbridge Vocational Qualification, which is intended to assure employers that the apprentice can demonstrate the high standards of competence set out by the industry.

“MP Skills have listened to what employers expect from this apprenticeship," says Trish Jagger, MP skills commercial manager. "With this information we have developed a versatile programme of training and assessment that is adaptable to meet the employers’ needs. This new apprenticeship builds on the success of the Mobile and Static plant apprenticeship."

The apprenticeship attracts £6,000 worth in funding. Non-levy employers may only need to pay 10% of the agreed training costs.
