RSPB seeks French project partner

The UK's RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds), Naturschutzbund Deutschland and Vlaamse Landmaatschappij are seeking a French project partner to work together on issues related to the restoration of spent minerals sites.

The UK’s RSPB (2900 Royal Society for the protection of Birds), 3600 Naturschutzbund Deutschland and 3601 Vlaamse Landmaatschappij are seeking a French project partner to work together on issues related to the restoration of spent minerals sites.

“Our aim is to enable extraction industries to be more sustainable by taking practical actions to encourage high quality site restoration,” says the RSPB.

Its objectives are to promote high quality site restoration for biodiversity before, during and after extraction; develop a mapping tool to identify and prioritise biodiversity restoration opportunities; develop an accredited industry restoration training programme, and assess the value of the ecosystem services provided by restoring sites for biodiversity.

“Based on the award-winning Nature After Minerals programme, there are proven benefits for business when communities appreciate the benefits of site restoration once extraction is finished. Communities benefit when environmental and amenity disturbance are reduced during the lifetime of extraction and from restoration in the long term. And, of course, biodiversity gains through the creation of new habitats.

"Our project proposal RESTORE will be submitted to the North-West Europe INTERREG funding programme next year."
