Douglas D. R. Palmore, senior vice president of customer and technical services at Luck Companies, is the 2017 recipient of the Barry K. Wendt Memorial Commitment Award from the U.S.-based National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA).

The highly prestigious Barry K. Wendt Memorial Commitment Award, which is named for a long-time industry leader and advocate, recognises an individual who exhibits exceptional, ongoing commitment to both the aggregate industry and the community in which the recipient lives.

Palmore’s career at Luck Companies spans 21 years with responsibility for many areas including operational support, engineering, customer experience, innovation, emerging businesses and risk management. Active in the community, he serves on the board of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Rice Rivers Center, where he shares his knowledge about environmental stewardship and preserving the region’s natural resources. He also serves on the board of Luck Companies Foundation and chairs the NSSGA’s legal and policy group.

Prior to joining Luck Companies, Palmore worked as an environmental engineer for Virginia Geotechnical Services in Richmond. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, a master’s degree from Virginia Tech, and an MBA from the University of Richmond. A licensed professional engineer, he is a graduate of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at U.Va.

“We are proud to present our association’s most distinguished individual award to Doug Palmore in recognition of his years of service to our industry, his positive work ethic and his selfless volunteer leadership,” said Michael W. Johnson, president and CEO of NSSGA. “He is very deserving of an honour that is given only to an elite group in our field.”

In accepting the award at the recent NSSGA annual convention, Palmore recognised the late Barry Wendt for being an inspiration to him and to others in the aggregate industry. “At Luck Companies, our mission is about leadership, igniting human potential and having a positive impact on the lives of others. I cannot think of a mission that is more aligned with the contributions that Barry Wendt made to our industry,” said Palmore. “The culture that we have created at Luck Companies inspires us to personally commit to the growth and success of one another and I am incredibly grateful to my colleagues and the NSSGA for investing in me.”

Palmore, who attributed this honour to those who have supported him, closed his acceptance remarks with a powerful notion stating: “I believe we all have incredible amounts of untapped potential and all it takes is the right person in the right environment to unleash that potential and change the world.”
