Gregory Meyer has been awarded the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association's Barry K Wendt Scholarship.
The association's Manufacturers & Services Division selected Gregory Meyer, a senior at Virginia Tech, as the recipient of the 2017 Barry K Wendt Memorial Scholarship.
Meyer, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mining & Minerals Engineering, was chosen for his academic achievement and intent to pursue a career in the aggregates industry. “Greg has a well-demonstrated interest in the aggregates industry, as shown by his internships at National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association members Martin Marietta and Tilcon Connecticut,” said Rich Blake of Mellott Company and the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association's M&S Division chair.
Through his internships, Meyer learned about the daily operations of an aggregates quarry, including operating mobile equipment and performing plant equipment maintenance, and expanded his knowledge of road and construction materials.
He also helped coordinate quarry tours with local boy scout and cub scout troops, with the goal of increasing community awareness about the role of quarries and aggregates in society.
In letters of recommendation, past supervisors and faculty advisors lauded Meyer’s work ethic, honesty and leadership by example.
“Greg exemplifies the kind of bright, hardworking person who will excel in our industry. The M&S Division is proud to award this year’s Barry K. Wendt Scholarship to him and look forward to his accomplishments in the aggregates industry,” Blake said.
“As the aggregates industry faces an increasing workforce shortage, we need to educate talented students on the benefits of working within our industry, and encourage those who show aptitude and interest in aggregates.”
