In order to highlight its virtuous practices at its gypsum quarries, plasterboard producer Placoplatre (6013 Saint-Gobain) organised visits to its extraction sites in Le Pin-Villeparisis and Cormeilles-en-Parisis in Ile-de-France.

According to Placoplatre, the Paris basin holds three-quarters of French gypsum deposits, although more than 80% of these deposits are not available.

The quarry in Le Pin-Villeparisis has been operated since 1822 and supplies 600,000tonnes of gypsum each year to Placoplatre's Vaujours factory.

Current extraction will come to an end towards 2018 and the company is planning to extend its scope to the east of the quarry where Placoplatre says there is a 15-year reserve, operating at a rhythm of 600,000 tonnes/year.

Placoplatre has operated the quarry in Cormeilles-en-Parisis since 1822. Some 350,000 tonnes are extracted each year, 10% of the national gypsum production. The deposit will be exhausted in 2017. Placoplatre is seeking permission for an extension to the quarry underground to extract 350,000tonnes of gypsum/year over a period of 30 years.
