395 Caterpillar has unveiled a number of product launches including the new Cat 336D2 (Series 2) excavator, which is said to be a powerful, productive, 36tonne-class machine that adds technical refinement to the solid design of its 336D predecessor.

The 336D2 uses the Cat C9 ACERT engine that meets US EPA Tier 2 equivalent emissions standards (a Tier 3 equivalent package is also available where required.). The C9 engine features precise electronic management of fuel and air to ensure optimum performance in all operating situations with exceptional fuel economy.

The new three-stage fuel filtration system on the 336D2 effectively removes harmful contaminants from potentially low-quality fuel, resulting in enhanced uptime and longer service life for fuel system components..

The hydraulic system features a new electric pressure sensor that reduces hydraulic flow from the pump during light-load or no-load situations, which also helps conserve fuel.

The engine and machine electronic control modules work in an integrated manner to provide optimum work power precisely where and when it is needed.

“With a maximum pressure of 35 MPA and maximum oil flow of 2 x 265litres/minute, the 336D2 provides superior hydraulic horsepower for digging and lifting as well as for using heavy-duty, hydraulically powered work tools. The pilot-type hydraulic system provides low-effort operation and precise control for optimum efficiency,” says Caterpillar.

Caterpillar says the 336D2 can use a wide range of pin-on or coupler-type buckets and work tools to fit the machine.

Also new is the new 320D Series 2 hydraulic excavator, which builds on the solid performance of its 320D predecessor.

The 320D/D L Series 2 uses a Cat C7.1 engine that meets US EPA Tier 2, EU Stage II and China non-road machine emission stage 2 regulations.

The engine is rated at 104 kW and uses an electric governor to control the mechanically actuated, low-pressure, fuel-injection system.

“The new system ensures optimum performance and reliability in areas where fuel quality is less than premium. A new filtration system uses a primary fuel filter/water separator and a secondary fuel filter to ensure clean fuel throughout the system,” says Caterpillar.

The engine can work efficiently at altitudes up to 4,000m, and compared to its predecessor uses approximately 3-5% less fuel, depending on work mode.

It can also use a wide range of buckets, either pin-on or coupler-type, along with a selection of ground-engaging tools, to fit the machine to its digging environment for optimum performance and durability.
