The 2010 edition of Hillhead opens its gates this month and ABE takes a look at some of the new equipment that will be on display at the UK event

With 417 exhibitors confirmed for the UK's 427 Hillhead quarry equipment exhibition this year, there looks set to be plenty of new machines and products on display for visitors. Early indications of the UK debuts planned for the show suggest that manufacturers are working to help improve safety and efficiency as well as productivity on site.

Drilling and blasting

460 Sandvik will display the first of the new generation of down-the-hole (DTH) drill rigs at Hillhead, which are said to offer improved productivity and user comfort in 5" hammer drilling. The new DI550 features a 324kW diesel engine and a 24.4m3 compressor air flow at 24 bar pressure, which Sandvik said makes the machine a perfect match for the 5" DTH hammer.

Also on Sandvik's stand will be the new 3.4tonne BR4099 hydraulic breaker that the company claims will deliver massive impact energy and high blow frequency for exceptional power-to-weight ratio.

Loading

2983 Bell Equipment is publicly showcasing its new range of E-Series wheeled loaders at Hillhead for the first time since their UK launch in 2008. Four of the seven-strong range of Bell wheeled loaders - the L1506E, L1706E, L1806E and L2606E models - will be on display.

Included in 633 JCB's static display are two flagship models - the quarry specification JCB 456 wheeled loading shovel with L5 tyres, chevrons and a camera for added on-site safety alongside the latest JCB JS360 tracked excavator with rock bucket and unique handrail.

394 Case will be demonstrating the largest model in its wheeled loader range - the 1221E - in the demonstration area. 403 Combi Wear Parts will be displaying its latest solutions for wheeled loaders with the new bucket lip protection ProClaws. The product range is available in three sizes for loaders and features mechanical lip shrouds and mechanical side shrouds together with teeth and adapters. The loader system is a further development of the excavator system which was launched on 386 Bauma 2007.

Hauling

Bell will also have new products on display for hauling operations with the MkVI D-series versions of the B30D, B40D and flagship 50-tonne B50D articulated dump trucks. The company has said that the MkVI machines have been given a host of largely "under the bonnet" and cabin improvements, setting yet another benchmark for the industry in terms of safety, ease of operation, reliability and performance.

Crushing and screening

Sandvik will be displaying the QE440 scalping screen that ABE had a sneak preview of at the company's customer event in June last year. The scalper is designed for screening heavy over burden at the rock face, prescreening and scalping and separation of cohesive aggregates.

Maximum Crushing & Screening will be having its official UK launch at the Hillhead 2010 show where it will be unveiling the Maximus 516 16x5 scalper. It is designed to cope with the heaviest applications and can be used in construction and demolition waste, primary crusher circuits, iron ore, aggregates, coal, recycling, heavy rock and topsoil.

A brand new motorised version of the world-leading Dodge torque-arm shaft-mounted speed reducer from Baldor Electric Company will make its European debut at Hillhead 2010. The product provides a breakthrough in compact and robust speed reduction, and complements Dodge's renowned belt-driven speed reducers.

Other new offerings for the crushing and screening market will be the 3652 Terex 4580 Pegson XA750 and 1500 Maktrack as well as the 800 and 2400 Warrior screens, 0 Metso Minerals will display its LT110C mobile crusher and 435 Kleemann will show its MC110Z jaw crusher. For the fixed market will be 426 Hazemag's AP-KV sand impactor and 664 Stelex's 4670 Hercules trommel range.

Washing

4339 Aggregate Processing Solutions, the specialist washing arm of the 0 Finlay Group, will be unveiling the latest addition to its portfolio with the launch of the APS-100AT. The new model is a multi-component material washing system, developed for the quarrying, recycling and remediation industries.

Central to its design is the introduction of a highly efficient, extreme duty linear multi-deck screen, with 'Atri-Jet' technology, to help remove fines. The adjustable system also ensures cleanliness of the final products. Floaters are removed and contained, and the plant also enhances the removal of lignite, wood, ash and clinker.

The new unit also features a 669 Trio Course Material Washer, which scrubs to dissolve clays and separates lightweight materials.

1796 Baioni Crushing Plants will be displaying its latest Baidec Centrifuge Decanter with twin motor controlled by a PLC control panel. The new 65L model is all electrically powered with no hydraulics. The centrifuge boasts high wear resistance with its sintered ceramic outlet ports, independant powered scraper tungsten carbide coated and tipped scroll. The PLC touch screen control panel allows the centrifuge to be automatically programmed for long running hours without an operater.

Also at Hillhead will be a visual and audio display of the new generation of Baioni mobile tracked crushers, the latest BAITRACK 130/85B AP a machine built around the largest primary AP130/85 jaw crusher and the only one of its kind in the world to be fully driven by electric motors, both for unit motion and production.

Safety

Crossroad Health & Safety will be presenting its latest management system to deal with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98) regulations. The new system is designed to replace paper-based versions and deliver the requirements through a computer-based system.

The company claims that the easy to use system is fully legal compliant, backed up by a team of qualified and competent safety professionals who ensure that organisations are kept up-to-date and informed of the latest requirements of UK Health and Safety Law.

Spillard Safety Systems will launch its range of Safe Step retractable personnel access systems which will be installed to an excavator for the show and will also be available for demonstration. Also being debuted will be the new VCAS360, which the company claims is the most technologically advanced 360 degree proximity detection system.
