Situated in one of the UK’s most sought after logistics locations, off junction 21 of the M1 motorway, the 40-acre industrial estate is currently being developed by commercial property specialists Goodman. Expected to complete later this year, the site will include two substantial distribution units of 335,000sq ft and 95,500sq ft - providing much needed distribution space in the heart of what’s come to be known as the ‘logistics golden triangle’.
Instrumental to this development is the supply and delivery of high quality hardstone aggregate, which has been used to build the foundations for the development. With this in mind, leading earthworks contractor Barton Plant called on the services of their long-standing supplier Aggregate Industries to provide the vast amount of materials needed.
Aggregate Industries’ specialist team supplied 22,000tonnes of type 1 sub-base aggregate over a five-month period, constituting 1,000 tonnes per day. A further 5,000tonnes of additional material will also be provided as the works progress.
With the project located on a flood plain, one of the main challenges the team encountered throughout is the severe weather during the winter months - which at times resulted in supplies being altered or required at short notice. Luckily, with its Bardon Hill Quarry located in nearby Coalville, Aggregate Industries were always on hand to deal with any issues and ensure a consistent supply.
Phil Koen, contracts manager at Barton Plant, said: “We’ve worked with Aggregate Industries for a number of years now and I’m always impressed by the quick, efficient and exceptional service they provide, which has been instrumental in progressing this particular project.
“Working on a development of this scale and complexity, it is important to partner with genuine experts that not only ensure our aggregate requirements are met through superior products but also have the expertise to react quickly if things don’t go to plan. I’d like to thank Aggregate Industries for their hard work and look forward to working with them on many future projects to come.”
Stewart Regan, sales manager at Aggregate Industries, said: “By working closely with Barton Plant from the outset, we were able to put a robust plan in place to ensure consistent supply despite extreme weather conditions throughout the winter months. As such, we looking forward to continuing our supply of aggregates to Leicester Commercial Park development until its completion later this year.”
