Runcorn, northwest England-based leading engineering and services provider Bilfinger UK has won a multi-million pound contract with 1707 Aggregate Industries to design, supply, and install new electrical infrastructure at the Bardon Hill quarry extension project.

The deal forms part of a significant scheme at the county Leicestershire site, which also includes installation of a new primary crusher and 4km of overland conveyors. The extension quarry will be operational in summer 2019 supplying over four million tonnes of aggregates per year to the UK construction industry.

Bilfinger will design, supply and install the electrical works required to deliver the extension project, which will include 12,000 metres of high voltage, low voltage and fibre-optic cabling, together with five new modular substations and transformers. Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems will be delivered for monitoring and control, ensuring all systems can run effectively and efficiently. Other site infrastructure will include fire, CCTV, voice, data, and security systems.

Bilfinger says the delivery team will have a peak workforce of approximately 35 employees.

Bardon Hill is one of the UK’s largest quarries and has supplied the aggregate materials used to build London’s Olympic Park, Wembley Stadium, St Pancras Station and the M1.

Dave Pickles, managing director for Engineering and Technology at Bilfinger UK, said: “The Bardon Hill quarry is an essential cog in the UK’s construction supply chain and as such, ensuring a smooth and efficient expansion will be key to delivering the supply of aggregated materials the industry needs.
“Given the scale and complexity of the quarry, an integrated electrical system powered by automation technology will play a critical role in completing the project. Our extensive experience in electrical engineering, together with our range of automated solutions, means we are well placed to deliver a scheme of this significance and scale.”

Tim Fry, Aggregate Industries project manager, said: “Bilfinger UK brings a wealth of experience in industrial applications. My team and I look forward to working with Bilfinger UK as our EC&I delivery partner to successfully deliver this prestigious project for Aggregate Industries UK Ltd.”

Bilfinger UK provides its partners with unified, multidisciplinary support across the asset lifecycle to drive new efficiencies and reduce costs, with services including design and build, automated control and electrical systems, installation, commissioning, and operations and maintenance. The company is one of the UK’s leading providers of integrated engineering and technical services to the process industry and the energy sector and employs more than 2,500 people. It is part of German engineering and service group, Bilfinger SE.
