643 CEMEX is providing radiation protective concrete to shield the radiotherapy facilities of the new National Center for Tumor Diseases building at Dresden University Hospital, in eastern Germany.

For these state-of-the-art research and patient treatment facilities, CEMEX is not only supplying 4,000m³ of structural concrete, but also delivering approximately 150m³ of radiation protective concrete to serve as a shield for the radiation therapy rooms.

“The National Center for Tumor Diseases is a unique project, requiring considerable innovation, coordination, and engagement to fulfill our customer’s needs,” said Andreas Hohenegger, regional manager Ready-Mix Northeast, CEMEX Germany. “Through our participation in this type of project, we reaffirm our commitment to deliver a truly superior customer experience anywhere, anytime.”

CEMEX developed a special concrete mix with radiation-absorbing aggregates to increase its protective effect and guarantee that high-energy rays do not spread uncontrollably, but are only directed to the designated therapy area. CEMEX’s concrete technologists worked on the construction site to closely monitor pouring of the mix, which required switching from a conventional mixer truck to a tower system to facilitate installation.

CEMEX’s cement and ready-mix technology centers are part of the R&D collaboration network, headed by CEMEX Research Group AG in Switzerland.
