A three-stage, 200tonnes/hour Terex Finlay track plant is being used on a major road project in Eastern India. Partha Pratim Basistha reports.

A trio 668 Terex Finlay models currently being deployed on the site of a major road widening works in Eastern India’s West Bengal state consist of one J-1175 jaw crusher, a C-1540 cone crusher and a three-deck 684 screen. The plant is crushing -65mm granular sub base materials generated from breaker-subjected rock boulders sourced at Saltora Mines, 90 kilometres from the site. After this initial crushing process, 40mm, 20mm, 10mm, and 6mm aggregate products are being created for two road lanes and the construction of paved shoulders along an 84km stretch of widened highway between Bankura and Purulia.

The Terex Finlay plant for the Bankura-Purulia project has been rented out by Suchita Millennium Projects, Eastern India dealer of Terex Finlay, Volvo CE, Volvo Penta and Atlas Copco, to Bharat Vanijya Eastern Private Limited, a West Bengal-based major road contractor.

The Bankura-Purulia work site has been designated by West Bengal state government as a quarry zone for the duration of the road project. The project is being overseen by the West Bengal State Public Works Department.

Speaking to Aggregates Business International, Raghupati Bhuwalka, director of Suchita Millennium Projects, said: “The project has got a colossal aggregates requirement of eight lakh tonnes. Out of the total requirements, our plants will have to deliver six lakh tonnes of aggregates. The remaining volumes will be sourced by the contractor from Pachami quarry zone in West Bengal. The output will have to be strictly delivered during the stipulated period of one year. This will require higher availability of the crushing plants and supporting equipments.

“Being the turnkey solution provider for the project means we are responsible for drilling, blasting and crushing. As such, we have ensured adequate product support to ensure higher availability of the three-stage plant. Appropriate product support has enabled us already to deliver three lakh tonnes of the total required volumes of crushed aggregates.”

Sharing details of product support for the plant, Bhuwalka added: “We have maintained adequate stocks of spare parts and consumables. This comprises lube oils, filters, gear plates, cone mantles and electrical parts. However, high levels of product support have been required owing to the 2.5-2.95 m³ tonnes gravity of the materials being crushed.”

Drilling and blasting is being used to extract the granular sub base material for the Bankura-Purulia road widening project. Drilling is being done through one of Suchita’s Atlas Copco D35 crawler mounted drills, while three 21tonne Volvo EC210 excavators are employed for breaking the boulders, feeding the generated aggregates to the plant and subsequent loading onto rigid dump trucks. Ashok Leyland and Tata rigid dump trucks are also transporting boulders to the Terex Finlay plants from Saltora.

The Terex Finlay crushing and screening models were bought by Suchita in October 2015, primarily for taking out crushing granular sub base materials for turnkey road construction projects. Following completion of the road project in West Bengal, the plant will be transported for crushing granular sub base materials for another major road project in the neighboring Eastern India state of Jharkhand.
