ACI and Carbon Leadership formally launch EC3 tool

November 26, 2019

The ACI Foundation has partnered with the Carbon Leadership Forum on the formal launch of the public beta of the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3) tool.

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) says the free tool is available for architects, engineers, owners, construction companies, building material suppliers and policy makers to compare and reduce embodied carbon emissions from construction materials.

EC3 is expected to aid supply chain specific analysis of embodied carbon data, utilising a searchable and sortable database of US and Canadian Environmental Product Declarations for concrete.

Ann M. Masek, executive director at ACI Foundation, says the institute, ACI Foundation and greater concrete community have been developing “knowledge on the use of concrete in innovative and sustainable development”.

ACI is conducting a webinar on the EC3 tool titled Innovation in Concrete Construction: Considering Embodied Carbon on 4 December.  The session will cover the basics of greenhouse gas accounting and introduce the EC3 tool as a viable means for owners, designers and contractors to reduce emissions in their building projects. It will be led by ACI pas president Anne Ellis and Kate Simonen, director of the Carbon Leadership Forum.
