Aggregate Industries, a subsidiary of LafargeHolcim, welcomed 1,848 members of the public to its Travilah Quarry, Rockville, as part of the Quarry Earth Day initiative. Visitors were provided with an insight into the quarry and the substances it produces.
Employees carried out guided bus tours into the 330-acre site. Guests learned about how the blasting, crushing, screening and processing methods lead to finished stone products and how they are then used to build roads, provide drainage and control erosion.
During the event, $60,000 donations were accepted for the local community library organisation Friends of the Library Quince Orchard Chapter. In addition, 1,000 tree seedlings were given away to attendees with help from the local scout pack and boy scout troop.
Other local community organisations that participated in the event by sharing information and education materials with community members included. These featured Montgomery County Recycling, Montgomery County & Fire Rescue, Rebuilding Together Montgomery County, National Building Museum (Sauls Seismic) and Dyno Nobel.
Guy Edwards, CEO of the US ACM business, says: “It was great to see everyone in the community come out and participate in Quarry Earth Day. The event was very well run by our local employees and it provided an opportunity for us to make connections with the Rockville community and teach them about what happens at the quarry."
