Cemex Latam Holdings is participating in the construction of a power plant based on liquefied natural gas in Central America to diversify Panama’s energy supply and make it a liquefied natural gas (LNG) distribution hub. Cemex expects to supply approximately 46,000 cubic meters of specialized concretes, including 26,000 cubic meters of cryogenic concrete and 12,000 cubic meters of low-heat hydration concrete. It has already supplied 83% of the required concrete in the project led by The AES Corporation.
Cemex participated in the construction of this facility in partnership with Hormigón Express, a Panamanian company.
Managed by Posco Engineering & Construction, the two-phase project requires special concretes adapted to their specific construction needs. The first phase comprises the construction of the foundation slab of the tank that will store the LNG and requires 12,000 cubic meters of low-heat hydration concrete.
In addition, Cemex will supply cryogenic concrete for the second phase which involves the construction of the tank coating and requires 26,000 cubic meters of concrete. Designed by European laboratories, it said to be adapted to withstand temperatures as low as -195°C an hour thanks to the utilization of third generation admixtures from Cemex’s Admixtures unit to meet the demanding technical requirements of this state-of-the-art facility.

The specialized concrete was designed by Cemex Panama and its Research Group AG. Cemex's cement and ready-mix technology centres are part of the R&D collaboration network, headed by its Research Group AG in Switzerland.
