Ross Island Sand & Gravel is to close its concrete division and lay off at least 24 employees, including truck drivers, mechanics and fuelers, according to a union representing the drivers.
In a report by Oregon Live, Bill Elzie, business agent with Teamsters Local 162, says: “All the reps, all the drivers that I talked to, they were caught flat-footed. Thunderstruck. They thought they were on the rebound.”
According to the report, the company declined to comment on the cutbacks and said any information will be released through The Portland Tribune.
Ross Island also owns asphalt general contractor KF Jacobsen and Pacific NW Aggregates as well as offering marine dredging.
