Scientists at the University of Waikato are said to have developed concrete which regenerates to repair cracks as they develop – according to a report by Voxy.co.nz.
This concrete, developed by doctor Aydin Berenjian and Ph.D student Mostafa Seifan, was created through using solid state fermentation with the assistance of nanobiotechnology. The process is believed to help industries such as construction materials, oil and gas industry, environmental remediation, among others.
The report specifies that this type of bio-concrete introduces micro-organisms and nutrients into the initial mix to create calcium carbonate when cracking takes place and fill them as they emerge.
Factors that affect the performance of the material includes the right bacterial species and nutrient ingredients as well as the availability of oxygen.
