Recent workplace injury statistics suggest that it’s safer to work in a quarry than a retail store, the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association says.
"Operators have achieved lower injury rates for 15 straight years to set a record low of 2 per 200,000 hours worked. Yet, despite the trend, regulators continue to pile on burdensome and overreaching rules that do not work to improve conditions."
"The same can be said about regulations coming from the Environmental Protection Agency. It is clear that aggregates operations are committed to being stewards of the environment, and regulators still put forward excessive rules that offer little connection to environmental improvement – like EPA’s Waters of the US rule," the association says.
"We need people who work in safety, health, permitting and environmental roles to talk with members of Congress about their daily efforts to boost safety and sustainability at their operation. NSSGA’s Legislative & Policy Forum/Fall Board Meeting, Sept. 24-28, in Washington, DC, will provide that opportunity"
"Now more than ever our industry is in need of regulatory reform and it’s the perfect time to advocate for common sense laws in our nation’s capital."
In addition to face time with decision makers inside the beltway, attendees can also take advantage of special professional development sessions. Some are focused on upcoming MSHA regulations and how the aggregates industry fits into rules on toxic substances and crystalline silica. Other sessions will show how to earn national recognition for environmentally-practices. NSSGA will even recognize outstanding operations with Awards of Excellence.
