725 Lafarge is to focus on two key areas in order to deliver its new CO2 reduction targets, the company has announced.

The first is to deliver a 33% reduction of CO2 emissions per tonne of cement produced by the end of 2020, compared to 1990 levels, and use of an innovative sustainable construction commitment based on solutions that enable the design of ‘low-energy’ buildings that will be used tomorrow.

The 33% reduction follows on from its commitment to cut levels by 20% between 1990 and 2010, which the company achieved in 2009 and delivered a reduction of 21.7% by the end of 2010.

The focus on the built environment comes because the company has said that buildings currently account for 40% of global primary energy consumption and this energy is mainly used through the daily use of the building during its lifetime. In order to contribute to energy efficiency, Lafarge is aiming to develop 10 new construction products or solutions and contribute to 500 energy efficient construction projects by 2015.

Lafarge chairman and CEO Bruno Lafont said, “Lafarge has made reduction of CO2 emissions a major objective and has met its commitments. But it is no longer a matter of just reducing the CO2 emitted in the production of our materials. It is also of developing construction solutions for building that consume less energy.”
