A 4,000-tonne cement silo is being developed in the Seychelles by Sri Lanka-based Dynamic Technologies (Dynamic) and Lafarge Mahaweli Cement.

The project is the seventh international venture to be jointly developed by the two companies. Lafarge Mahaweli Cement is part of the Lafarge Group.

The Eurocement Group is reported to have closed down Savinsky Cement Plant in the Arkhangelsk region (North-West) for modernisation until 2018.

Employees of the factory are afraid the production will be eliminated with voluntary resignation offered by the management of the plant said to be the reason for the rumour.

The Savinsky cement plant produced 207,000tonnes of cement in January-August 2014, down 57% compared with the same period of 2013.

It is reported that in an interview with Les Echos, Bruno Lafont, the CEO of French construction materials group Lafarge, has said that the proposed merger with Swiss group Holcim is not a defensive move but rather an anticipatory one.

He added that the company will be better equipped to restart research efforts in a bid to speed up development, having already obtained four or five authorisations from the competition authority.

FLSmidth has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PT ANTAM, a diversified mining and metals company headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia, to supply design, testing and services for developing mining projects in and around Indonesia.

Hope Construction Materials, Britain’s leading independent supplier of aggregates and concrete, has announced the opening of its first new, greenfield quarry as part of its UK development plan.

The Black Cat Quarry on the A1 Black Cat roundabout near Roxton in County Bedfordshire, England, will supply more than 100,000tonnes of sand and gravel each year to use in concrete for building and construction across the northern Home Counties.

The value of imports of construction materials to Algeria increased year-on-year by 7% in the first eight months of 2014 to US$2.25 billion from $2.11 billion in 2013.
