According to a study of Informa D&B the sales of Portuguese cement in foreign markets surpassed the €133 million in 2013 and Algeria is the main exporting market.
Following the crisis that is affecting the Portuguese construction sector many cement companies have been relying on foreign markets to consolidate their business performance.
The exports of cement in 2013 rose by 30% compared to the previous year. The imports in turn fell to €18 million and compares to €16 million recorded in 2012 and €21 million in 2010.
Some 90% of the imported cement comes from Spain, and in 2013 the demand for cement in the domestic market fell by 23% compared to 2012 to an estimated 2.7 million tonnes. And in value the market decreased by 21% to €255 million compared to €455 million reported in 2010.
The sales of the market leader 1347 Cimpor fell by 24% in 2013 compared to the previous year to a total of 1.5 million tonnes. The production of concrete in 2013 was down to 2.6 million m³, a decrease of 30% compared to the previous year and the reported value was estimated at €155 million, some €120 million less compared to the previous year. In 2012 there were recorded 270 processing facilities of concrete in Portugal.
