Algeria’s new production sites to ensure cement and steel self-sufficiency, says minister

Algeria’s Minister for Industry and Mines, Abdeslam Bouchouareb, claims that the country is heading towards self- sufficiency for cement and steel products due to the opening of new production sites. Algeria will be able to produce all the cement it needs by 2016, by which time there will even be a surplus, according to the Minister. Algeria’s Minister for Industry and Mines, Abdeslam Bouchouareb, claims that the country is heading towards self- sufficiency for cement and steel products due to the opening of new production sites. Algeria will be able to produce all the cement it needs by 2016, by which time there will even be a surplus, according to the Minister. Around three million tonnes of cement are currently imported every year.

The move towards Algerian cement self-sufficiency is being aided by new cement works in Biskra - the first in Branis is set to start production in December 2015 with a capacity of  one million tonnes, and the second, in Djemora, will have a capacity of 2.7mn tonnes and is due to start production in Q1 2016.
