The pumps will be used to transport tailings (fine particles of iron ore too small for processing) to be deposited.
Weir Minerals will supply two different sizes of the heavy-duty, high-capacity slurry pump, the Warman UY-GHPP (the 3m diameter 28/24) and the Warman HGY-AHP 2.84m diameter 20/18, within the order.
The pumps will work alongside 11 Weir Minerals pumps already in use at the mine.
Tony G. Locke, managing director of Weir Minerals Europe, said: “Transporting tailings is often the most energy-intensive slurry-based mining process because of the highly viscous nature of the material, so specifying the right unit for the job will deliver a significant cut in running costs.
“The material is also highly abrasive, and the most robust internal parts must be used to keep the frequency of replacement to a minimum.
“The pumps we are supplying for this application deliver wear-life of parts of up to 7,000 hours while moving up to 12,000m³ of material per hour – performance which we believe is unrivalled in the industry.
“This order further consolidates the portfolio of world-leading industrial businesses that choose to deploy Warman pumps at their operations around the globe, and we look forward to continuing to support ArcelorMittal in the future.”
Rajendra Pokharna, general manager (purchase) at ArcelorMittal said: “We are constantly looking to increase energy efficiency wherever possible, and we’re confident these pumps are the best choice for the application to achieve this.”
