Year-on-year UK aggregates sales volumes increased by 2% last year, but the outlook for 2019 is likely to be flat.

The prediction was made by Jerry McLaughlin, executive director of economic and public affairs at the Mineral Products Association, to the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Mining and Quarrying in the House of Commons earlier this month.

CEMEX has reached a binding agreement to sell its aggregates and ready-mixed concrete assets in the North and North-West regions of Germany to GP Günter Papenburg AG for approximately €87 million.

The Mexican headquartered global building materials supplier currently expects to sign a final agreement for the sale of assets during April 2019 and close this divestment during the second quarter of 2019.

A new BDS Marketing Research report highlights how UK aggregates demand is set to increase over the next decade supported by major infrastructure projects including HS2, Hinkley Point C, Crossrail 2, Heathrow Runway 3, Road Investment Strategy 2 and government plans to provide 300,000 new homes each year.

Critical to this delivery, says the BDS report, is the provision of an adequate source of aggregates across Great Britain from all sources including primary land-won and marine, recycled and secondary.
