MSHA confirms first fatality of 2021 

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has announced a miner was fatally injured while using a tool to remove a down-the-hole hammer. 

The MSHA says the drill motor turned unexpectedly, pinning the driller’s leg between the tool and the drill mast.

This is the first fatality reported in 2021 and the first classified as 'machinery', the administration adds.

NSSGA supports Saving America's Mines Act

The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) vice president of government and regulatory affairs Michele Stanley has issued a statement supporting the Saving America's Mines Act.

“On behalf of the 400 members of the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association, I applaud Rep. Pete Stauber (MN) for introducing the Saving America’s Mines (SAM) Act. This legislation provides needed certainty for aggregates operators who supply communities on and near federal lands with essential construction materials.

Lafarge completes phase II of Project CO2ment 

Lafarge Canada, Svante and Total have completed phase II of Project CO2ment, an initiative to capture industrial levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at a cement plant.

The partners are carrying out the project at Lafarge's Richmond cement plant in British Columbia. 

The plant is now equipped with Svante's capture unit, a carbon capture technology aimed at trapping CO2 produced from industrial processes.

WCA launches Gender Focus Network

The World Cement Association has launched the Gender Focus Network, an initiative aiming to improve the representation of women within the global cement community.

The WCA says the network will address the significant gender imbalance in the global cement sector
