Indonesia: Semen Baturaja reports sale growth of 29%

During the first eight months of 2015, Semen Baturaja has reported sales volume of 922,408tonnes, up from 714,863tonnes.

Net sales were at IDR 880.1 billion (€54.22 million/US$61.25 million), a year-on-year growth of 29%.

Indonesia’s cement sales estimated to have increased 15% annually

According to Citi Research, cement sales in Indonesia were estimated to have risen by 15%/year in August 2015, representing the first rise since January 2015.

With more robust sales, Semen Indonesia, the biggest cement manufacturer in the country, was able to boost its shares by over 30% after facing a six-year low in August 2015.

Caterpillar to make major restructuring and cost cutting moves due to tough market conditions

Caterpillar has announced significant restructuring and cost reduction actions that are expected to lower the US construction equipment manufacturing giant’s operating costs by around $1.5 billion annually. The cost reduction steps, including the loss of thousands of jobs, will begin in late 2015 and are said to reflect recent, current and expected market conditions.

Philippines: San Miguel adds three new cement plants in expansion drive

The Philippines-based San Miguel Corporation is adding a further three cement factories as part of its expansion drive.

This would increase the group's proposed cement manufacturing investment to nearly US$1 billion (€881.95 million).

In July 2015, San Miguel announced it is to invest US$800 million in two cement factories that are due for completion in 2017.

Cement consumption in Catalonia falls in August

According to Ciment Catala, cement consumption in Catalonia, Spain, fell 2.9% during August 2015, following ten months of growth.

Figures for the first eight months of the year, however, show a 9.1% growth.

Cement production dropped 6.5% to just over 1.5 million tonnes.

Tanzania: Lafarge Cement invests in clean water supply project

Cement maker Lafarge Cement Tanzania is providing clean water to the Songwe Village close to its Mbeya plant by participating in a water project.

Lafarge has invested over TZS 10 million (€4,124.05/US$4,614.67) in the project, which includes a water storage tank and equipment to provide drinking water to more than 200 households.

Zambia: Lafarge records post-tax profit of US$36,017 in H1, 2015

Despite political uncertainties in the Democratic Republic of Congo and economic challenges in Zambia, cement maker Lafarge Zambia was able to record post-tax profit of US$36,017 (€32,187.71) in the first half of 2015, up 4% year-on-year.

According to Lafarge Zambia, cement production in 2015 was adversely impacted by electricity supply disruptions.

SMBR's net profit rises 27% to IDR 224.7bn

Net profit of Indonesia's Semen Baturaja (SMBR) stood at IDR 224.70 billion (€13.82 million/US$15.67 million) during January-August 2015, a climb of 27% from the corresponding period of 2014.

The main market of SMBR is Bengkulu, Jambi, Lampung and South Sumatra.

In the cited period, the demand for cement in South Sumatra expanded 4% year-on-year.

India: UltraTech Cement’s new unit

A 1.6 million tonne grinding unit has been commissioned in Haryana in India by India-based UltraTech Cement.

This brings its cement production capacity to 63.1 million tonnes/year.

Aditya Cement in Rajasthan will supply the clinker needed for the unit. It aims to increase its total production capacity to 71million tonnes/year.

Meanwhile, the cement company is planning to raise INR 90 billion (€1.21 billion/US$1.37 billion).

Shareholders approval has been sought.

Mozambique: Cimentos invests in new plant

Mozambique's cement company Cimentos de Mocambique is set to produce 700,000tonnes in 2015 and should invest some US$250 million (€220.49 million) in a new unit in Nacala, province of Nampula and which will have an output capacity of 1.5 million tonnes/year.

The company has recently invested US$10 million in a new filtering system at the group's plant based in Matola, near the capital city of Maputo.

Kenya: Cemtech to construct cement plant in 2016

Cemtech will start construction work for a KES 12 billion (€100.60 million/US$114.07 million) cement processing plant in West Pokot County in Kenya in early 2016.

The plant will process around 1.2 million tonnes of cement/year, upon completion, according to Diptish Nandha, general manager of Cemtech. Cemtech is a unit of India-based Sanghi Group.

AEM - US construction equipment exports drop 17%

Exports of US-made construction equipment fell 17% for the first half of 2015 compared to the first half of 2014, with US$7.4 billion of products shipped to global markets.

All world regions experienced declines, with Africa’s the steepest, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). The AEM equipment manufacturing trade group cited U.S. Department of Commerce data it uses in global market reports for members.

Wirtgen Group unveils huge investment plans

The Wirtgen Group says it is to invest some €150 million in its mineral technologies unit in 2016-2017, including a new site for Benninghoven and expansion for Kleemann.

Italy’s Buzzi Unicem makes binding bid for Sacci

Buzzi Unicem has presented a binding offer to buy the cement and ready-mix concrete units of cement maker Sacci as it pushes ahead with plans to play an active role in the consolidation of the sector in Italy.

In a statement Buzzi said it had offered a provisional price of €74 million to be financed through liquidity on hand and/or existing credit facilities.

Superior Industries acquires crusher facility from FLSmidth

Superior Industries, a major American-based manufacturer and global supplier of bulk material processing and handling systems, has reached an agreement to purchase the assets of FLSmidth’s crusher manufacturing plant in Pekin, Illinois, USA.

According to Superior, the major asset associated with the transaction is a ten-year-old, 70,000 square foot (6,500m²) plant that currently employs 30 employees.
