Cemex 16th in Fortune magazine’s 50 Change the World companies list

Mexican cement giant Cemex has been included in Fortune magazine’s prestigious Change the World list of companies making “significant progress in addressing major social problems as part of their core business strategy.”

In 16th place out of the 50 companies from all over the world that made the list, Cemex is the only Latin-American based company included and the only company from the construction materials sector.

Aerated concrete plant to be built in Russia’s Krasnodar region

An aerated concrete plant is set to be built in the Vyselkovsky district of Russia’s southern Krasnodar region. The €4.24 million (RUB 305 million) project will see the plant located on a 90,000m² plot. Around 90,000m³ of wall blocks will be produced each year. It will take eight years to build the facility, with the pay-back period expected to be nearly six years. Investors are being sought for the project, which will create 54 new jobs.

Portugal’s Cimpor posts €12.8 million losses in H1 2015

Cimpor, the Portuguese cement group, recorded losses of €12.8 million at the end of H1 2015. While group turnover rose by 4.8% to €1.302 billion, the volume of cement and clinker sold was down by 5.7% to 14 million tonnes. The sales in the Brazilian market alone were down by 16.1% to €474.4 million.

Caterpillar make Seeing Machines Ltd off-road product move

Seeing Machines Ltd (SML) is reported to be in advanced negotiations with Caterpillar for the US construction equipment manufacturing giant to take over responsibility for manufacturing, marketing and sales of Seeing Machines' existing DSS rugged off-road product.

Holcim secures US$5.5bn Indonesian contract to fix roads in Jakarta

Holcim Indonesia has secured a USD 5.50bn (EUR 4.95bn) project from Jakarta authorities to fix and maintain roads in Jakarta. The Jakarta Post reports that the two-stage project will be utilising a fast-drying formula concrete called SpeedCrete. Swedish Green Party MP's fears over quarrying in Ojnareskogen nature area

Swedish Green Party MPs have called on the country’s government to ensure the protection of the Ojnareskogen nature area in northern Gotland amid plans to quarry the site’s limestone.

The views of Carl Schlyter and Annika Lillemets comes as the Swedish government is to announce whether to protect Ojnareskogen no later than on 31 August 2015. Finnish minerals company Nordkalk wants to quarry limestone in the area, but some fear quarrying will have negative consequences on the area.

Cemex stages second year of Driving Apprenticeship Scheme

For the second year, Cemex is running its Driving Apprenticeship Scheme with the aim of recruiting 18 young people who want a career in driving aggregate tippers and cement tankers. Of the 18, 13 will be based at quarries, wharves or depots gaining experience with aggregate tippers.

This year the scheme has been extended to cement logistics, with apprentice drivers based at the company’s three cement operations: Rugby, South Ferriby and Tilbury.

Nigeria’s Ogun State partners Lafarge on green initiative

Nigeria’s Ogun State government is teaming up with cement manufacturer Lafarge Africa to develop state-wide solutions for waste management.

A working committee will be established as part of the effort to develop solutions for managing various wastes in Ogun. The parties will also establish a transparent and sustainable legacy on renewable energy. The planned forest restoration initiative by the two bodies is aimed at addressing environmental concerns.

LafargeHolcim enters into assets divestment agreement with Birla Corporation

LafargeHolcim has entered into a letter agreement with Birla Corporation for the €691 million (INR 50 billion) divestment of some of its Indian assets as part of the merger of its legacy companies.

New Kyrgyzstan cement plant to be set up by Zhejiang Shangfeng

Issue of licenses for new Egyptian cement factories postponed

New cement factory licenses in Egypt are being postponed by the North African country’s General Authority for Industrial Development (GAID). The move is said to be due to a rise in the untapped potential of existing plants and the recession in domestic and global markets.

Cemex to sell Austria and Hungary operations to Rohrdorfer Group

Mexican cement giant Cemex is selling its operations in Austria and Hungary to the Rohrdorfer Group for around €160.1 million.

The Austrian operations consist of 24 aggregate quarries (approximately 6.47 million tonnes of aggregates sold in 2014) and 34 ready-mix plants (approximately 1.6 million m³ of ready-mixed sold in 2014). Cemex’s operations in Austria had net sales of approximately €216.4 million in 2014.
