Lehigh Hanson will invest $600m to modernise its plant in Mitchell. The project is intended to increase the facility's production capacity and reduce energy usage and emissions.
Jon Morrish, CEO of Lehigh Hanson, says: “The modernisation of the Mitchell plant will enable us to produce cement more efficiently and sustainably through the use of state-of-the-art technology and the latest in environmental controls and systems.”
The upgrade will also allow the company to improve its service to customers in the Midwest and expand its reach, adds Morrish.
According to Lehigh, the initiative will create around 50 full-time jobs at the plant and over 1,000 construction positions. In addition, current employees are expected to receive enhanced training and growth opportunities.
For the project, Lehigh Hanson is working with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to obtain air permits and is also collaborating with Indiana Economic Development Corporation regarding available business incentives.
Over several years, the company has worked with local and state officials to develop road connecting the plant to IN-37. Meanwhile, overall logistics will change to accommodate additional rail activity to handle increased shipments from the plant.
Lehigh is setting up a community advisory panel for local leaders and residents to learn more about the expansion. A public house is scheduled for 28 July from mid-day to 5.00pm.
Jerry Miller, Mitchell plant manager, says: “Lehigh Hanson’s investment is not only in the Mitchell plant, but also in the Mitchell community, and our dedicated and hard-working employees will continue contributing to the positive legacy of Lehigh in Mitchell for years to come.”
