Clay brick producer Röben-Klinkerwerke would like to open a new clay pit in Reetz since the reserves in the existing clay pit are close to being used up, and the pit is to be turned into a lake.

However, the company would like to dig clay and produce clay bricks in Reetz for at least another 20 years. The new clay pit is to have a size of 46 hectares and requires approval.

The Canadian branch of French construction materials group Lafarge has acquired eight ready-mix concrete factories from James Dick Construction, it is reported.

The acquisition involves 30 staff and will reinforce Lafarge Canada's ready-mix concrete activities in Ontario. The eight factories are located in Alliston, Caledon, Oshawa, Bolton, Scarborough, Brampton and Hamilton and will be operated under the name James Dick Concrete.

In 2014, H+H (subsidiary to H+H Denmark) intends to invest RUB 18 million (€380,337.45) to upgrade of its aircrete plant in the Leningrad region.

The plant's output will grow from 380,000m3 to 450,000m3. In 2013, RUB 15 million was invested in Stage 1 of the upgrade project.

The plant produced around 330,000m3 of aircrete in 2013, CEO Nadezhda Soldatkina says. Sales reached 303,000m3 (equal to the result of 2012).

Frischbeton Schwenk is planning to relocate its concrete production plant from Braunstein to the Wippingen stone quarry in Germany, of which Schwenk is the sole operator.

The company plans to invest around €4 million, and if all goes as planned Schwenk could start concrete production at the new location at the beginning of 2015.

The Scottish Government has decided to call in plans to extend Hyndford Quarry in New Lanark, an area which UNESCO named as a World Heritage Site in 2001.

A study led by the Carbon Trust and Lafarge Tarmac has found that a low temperature asphalt (LTA) material could be used as alternative to conventional asphalt on roads. Conventional asphalt is made when aggregates and bitumen are bound together at temperatures of between 180ºC-190ºC. However, the trial found that the alternative is able to bond road materials just as effectively at lower temperatures, meaning that it uses less energy.
