Cramlington, north-east England-based Miller Groundbreaking won orders of the value of £200,000 (€237,000) after attending the inaugural UK plant exhibition Plantworx 2013 at Stoneleigh Park, County Warwickshire, England. The Plantworx show is the UK's new biennial event for the construction industry, and attracting in excess of 10,000 visitors and with over 100,000m² of live construction equipment, it will features construction applications and working machinery.

Cemex's strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions has seen its plants in Germany achieve a substitution rate for alternative fuels of 82.6% in April 2013. During the month, the firm's Kollenback plant substituted the use of 12,000tonnes of coal for alternative fuels, such as industrial, agricultural and municipal waste. Italian cement manufacturer Italcementi has reopened the five-year senior bond originally launched on 21 February 2013. While the bond was originally valued at €350 million this has now been extended by an additional €150 million. The issue is being managed by UniCredit, Natixis, BNP Paribas, Banca IMI and Credit Agricole CIB.

In the first quarter of 2013, Titan Cement of Greece posted a 19% rise in its revenues, to €51 million in comparison with the corresponding period in 2012. Titan also posted an EBITDA loss of €2 million from €12 million profits as well as a net loss of €17 million from €0.2 million profits. At group level, its revenues rose by 8%, to €243 million while its EBITDA dropped by 29%, to €24 million compared with the same period last year.

Danish group FLSmidth has been awarded a contract for the construction of a cement factory in Akoga, Equatorial Guinea. The order from Grupo Abayak Akoga Cemento is valued at just over DKK 500mn (€67 million). Capacity of the plant, which is scheduled to be taken into operation by 2016, will be 3,000tonnes of cement per day.

Lafarge has signed an agreement to raise €200 million through capital increase subscribed by Baring Private Equity Asia, and representing a 14% minority stake in its Indian subsidiary, Lafarge India. The transaction, which is subject to the approval of local regulatory authorities, will accelerate Lafarge’s growth plans in India in all its product lines: cement, aggregates and concrete. In Kenya, a fleet of eight Doosan MT41 articulated dump trucks (ADTs) is being used by Frabo & Co to carry rock down the steep slopes of a nearby quarry and on to the site of the Chemususu dam project. The aim of the scheme, in the Rift Valley 250km north-east of the capital, Nairobi, is to make access to safe water much easier. Completion is scheduled soon.

Cemex is to supply cement for a new government funded project on the River Nile, Egypt, a new hydroelectric plant and tidal barrage with completion set for 2017. The project will generate 32MW of energy and improve irrigation while helping to provide water and renewable energy to the cities of Assiut, Minya, Beni Suef, Fayoum and Giza. Cemex is working with the project contractor to carry out tests for the optimum cement mix composition for the project.
