The British Aggregates Association (BAA) says its fears over exemptions to the “ill-conceived” aggregates levy have been realised, after HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) started the process of recovering unpaid aggregates levy on shale aggregates.

Cimentos de Mocambique, the subsidiary of Portuguese cement company Cimpor based in Mozambique, has started building a new US$250 million factory for cement production in Nacala. The project will be delivered in partnership with an international supplier.

German cement manufacturing giant HeidelbergCement has purchased a further 62.91% share in Cimescaut through its subsidiary Cimenteries CBR for €47.9 million. Cimescaut is a Belgian seller and manufacturer of crushed limestone and related products. HeidelbergCement now owns a 96.93% share in Cimescaut following the transaction. HeidelbergCement also plans to make an offer to purchase the remaining 3.07% share in Cimescaut.

R Collard, a company specialising in construction waste management and demolition, has opened a new, state-of-the-art aggregate washing plant at its recycling facility in Eversley, county Hampshire, south England.

Algeria’s Minister for Industry and Mines, Abdeslam Bouchouareb, claims that the country is heading towards self- sufficiency for cement and steel products due to the opening of new production sites. Algeria will be able to produce all the cement it needs by 2016, by which time there will even be a surplus, according to the Minister.
