Have investigators solved the ancient riddle of why Roman concrete was so durable?

The ancient Romans were masters of engineering, constructing vast networks of roads, aqueducts, ports, and massive buildings, whose remains have survived for two millennia. Many of these structures were built with concrete: Rome’s famed Pantheon, which has the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome and was dedicated in A.D. 128, is still intact, and some ancient Roman aqueducts still deliver water to Rome today. Meanwhile, many modern concrete structures have crumbled after a few decades.

US construction employment up by 28,000 in December, says ABC

The US construction industry added 28,000 jobs on net in December, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) analysis of new data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a year-over-year basis, industry employment has risen by 231,000 jobs or 3.1%.

How Christmas leftovers have the power to reduce cement carbon emissions

Many of us have been tucking into our Christmas dinners, but we rarely take time to think about what happens to the leftovers from producing all the delicious food of the season. However, without wanting to spoil your appetite for the inevitable leftovers, there is an important policy issue for what we do with waste biomass, including meat and bone meal (MBM) and household food waste. Getting the most carbon emissions reduction at best value for money is currently a missed opportunity from this waste stream.

Cummins launches new CS IV engine range for China market

Cummins has unveiled a new generation of clean off-road engines that meet China National Stage IV emissions (CS IV) which started on 1 December 2022. The upgraded engines, with displacements from 2.8 to 15-litres, range from 36-503kW. They achieve higher power output and torque than their predecessors and continue to bring proven, premium performance ideally suited for the toughest duty cycles.

Cementa wins right to continue quarrying in Gotland

Heidelberg Materials' Swedish subsidiary Cementa is being allowed to continue quarrying material at its Slite limestone quarries on the island of Gotland, the country's Land and Environmental Court has announced.

 The latest legal decision appears to safeguard the immediate future of Sweden's cement supply. The Gotland site produces three quarters of the country's cement.
