City of Amarillo rescinds COVID-19 closure order for Howell Sand

The City of Amarillo announced this week that has rescinded its COVID-19 Communicable Disease Control Order against Howell Sand Company Inc.

According to official statements, city officials and the owners of Howell Sand have been able to resolve the issues that resulted in the closure action last week.

The shut-down in Texas occurred when the Amarillo Public Health Department asked Howell Sand to close down its operations after several COVID-19 cases were discovered in the area.

AMI is up and running at Coffey Lake only 12 months after approval

AMI (Athabasca Minerals Inc) has opened its Coffey Lake Public Pit site in Alberta and made its first deliveries of aggregates only a year after getting the official go-ahead.

According to AMI chief executive officer Robert Beekhuizen: “This is a remarkable accomplishment in today’s regulatory environment.”

As ARI has reported in recent months, the AMI team  been busy putting through applications, obtaining approvals, and clearing and constructing the Coffey Lake site in the past 12 months.

Quarry noise plan struggles with expert review in Maine

An acoustical consulting firm is going to be brought in to review the plan by Harold MacQuinn Inc and Freshwater Stone to muffle noise at MacQuinn’s granite quarry in the village of Hall Quarry.

The site is based on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, Maine. This is the largest island off the coast of Maine.

The two companies have applied for a licence for Freshwater to operate the one-acre quarry. Their attorney, Ed Bearor, has said that they would agree to pay up to $2,500 for an expert sound review.

Marble quarry operator Colorado Stone Quarries guilty of violating Clean Water Act

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has determined that the operators of a Colorado marble quarry violated the Clean Water Act when they diverted a tributary of the Crystal River to make way for a mining road.

In the fall of 2018, Colorado Stone Quarries, which operates Yule Quarry just outside the town of Marble Colorado, diverted Yule Creek from its natural channel.

According to a report on the local Post Independent website, operators piled the original streambed with fill material, including marble blocks.

Hitachi launches new hydraulic breaker range

Hitachi has introduced a range of new high-performance hydraulic breakers that are suitable for the full range of Hitachi ZX excavators from ZX10 up to ZX890. Quarry managers will find the new units are well-suited to breaking drilling and blasting operations.

The new breakers can be fitted and maintained by Hitachi factory-trained engineers which the company says ensures maximum productivity, high performance and low total cost of ownership.
