Marine aggregates are growing in importance
Marine aggregates, naturally occurring sand and gravels found in the sea, are of growing importance as land-based quarrying faces environmental pressure. The geological origin and mineral composition are the same as land-based sands and gravels or aggregates and exhibit the same geological, mechanical, geometrical and chemical properties as their land-based equivalents, says the Marine Aggregates Information Centre.
“The shape, strength and other physical characteristics are generally identical to high-q
Tough new limits on engine emissions for aggregates equipment
Simon Trahair-Davies of Stephens Scown LLP outlines some proposed European legislation which sets stringent new pollution limits for machinery, an important development for aggregates businesses to take note of.
In September 2014, the European Commission proposed measures that will cut emissions of major air pollutants from engines in non-road mobile machinery (NRMM).
The new legislation includes new, tighter emissions limits that aim to contribute to EU air quality targets and will apply to new NRMM
Plant Automation taken off in quarrying and agregates facilites
Plant automation has taken off in a big way in quarrying and aggregate processing facilities. Guy Woodford looks at some of the latest solutions.

The challenge of loading quarry trucks
The importance of how quarry trucks are loaded, and the impact on productivity and fuel consumption, has been emphasised many times. Get it right and the figures can make pleasing reading, but get it wrong and it costs money and can make machines carry out unnecessary manoeuvres, thus increasing
maintenance requirements.
Volvo leading the hauler market growth
Demand for proven and new hauler models is steadily growing – with Europe among the key regional markets offering encouragement to OEMs. Guy Woodford reports Volvo Construction Equipment is a leading international player in the articulated hauler market, and its parent company, Volvo Group, has significantly strengthened its hauler offering with this year’s completed multi-million dollar acquisition of Terex Trucks.
