Saudi Arabia-listed cement firms post lower profits

A financial report by Al-Riyadh daily newspaper has revealed Saudi Arabia-listed cement companies recorded almost US$517.25 million (SAR 1.94 billion) in revenues in the second quarter of 2014, while realising sales worth SAR 3.66bn.

Limak partners Afrikbat for Ivory Coast cement production

Turkish cement producer Limak Cimento Grubu is linking up with Afrikbat to build a cement production facility in Ivory Coast. The two frims have set up a new company, Afrika, and Limak has a 51% share in this firm. The plant will be based in Abidjan and will cost US$50 million. It will produce 1 million m³ ready-to-use cement when it opens in October 2015, and will export products to other African countries. Cemtech prepare to build Kenyan cement plant

Cemtech, a subsidiary of India-based Sanghi Group, is preparing to start construction of the US$136.38 million (KES 12 billion) Pokot Cement Factory in Kenya. The cement plant is expected to achieve annual output of over 1.2 million tonnes and Cemtech will set up a power plant as well as staff houses, schools, staff training centre, a medical centre and other facilities.

Angola’s Cimenfort to expand Lobito factory

Angola-based cement company Cimenfort has announced that expansion work on its factory in Lobito, Benguela, western Angola will lead to a 50-70% increase in capacity. The expansion work will take place over two stages, with the first, set for Q1 2015, to double the capacity of the factory. The second stage will see the construction of the blast furnace, which is expected to take two years to complete. Metso and JK Tech’s Chilean partnership

Metso and JKTech have signed a five-year research agreement to develop next-generation technologies and services for energy-efficient minerals concentration. Semen Indonesia plan US$500mn capital investment

Indonesian cement maker Semen Indonesia is aiming to spend US$500 million on capital investment in 2015. The company expects cement the country’s cement demand to rise due to government continuation of infrastructure projects. World asphalt market to rise 3.6%, claims Freedonia report

World demand for primary asphalt, which is refined from crude petroleum or mined from naturally occurring sources, is projected to rise 3.6% a year to 2017 from a weak 2012 base to 121 million tonnes/year (734 million barrels), according to the ‘World Asphalt’ market report by Freedonia.

Deutz welcomes ‘significant’ sales and revenues rise

Deutz has significantly increased its unit sales and revenues in the first half of 2014, compared to the same period of last year. Algeria’s 30% rise in cement imports in H1 2014

The value of Algerian cement imports were up 30.11% to US$283.9 million in H1 2014 compared to the same period of 2013, reports the country’s customs authority. The imported quantity is estimated to weigh 3.09 million tonnes, compared to 2.44 million tonnes in H1 2013, an increase of 26.55%.

The World Concrete Forum has published its World Concrete 500 - a list of the top 500 players on Twitter from the international cement and concrete industry. Cemex will secure unconditional European Union antitrust approval for its planned acquisition of Swiss peer Holcim's Spanish units, Reuters reports a person familiar with the matter saying. ContiTech opens new sales office in Peru

German conveyor belts manufacturer, the ContiTech Conveyor Belt Group, has opened a sales office in Lima, the capital city of Peru, with the goal of building up a local service team that supervises projects on location. “Peru's mining sector is the fastest growing mining sector in South America. Holcim/Lafarge announce the list of proposed asset disposals as part of planned merger

Greek cement maker Titan Q2 2014 profit from US growth

Greek cement producer Titan says its second-quarter net profit more than doubled thanks to strong growth in the United States, increasing to US$18.6 million (€13.9 million) from $7 million (€5.3 million) in the same period last year. Titan was hit by the US housing market and Greek debt crises but has fared better since last year thanks to a recovery in demand for building materials in the United States and the kick-start of a major toll road project in Greece.

From 22-25 September 2014, the Caterpillar Visitor and Learning Centre in Leicester, United Kingdom, will become the stage for a major international competition in which construction machinery operators from Europe, the Middle East and CIS will battle it out in what has been dubbed the toughest operator competition on earth: the Cat Operator Challenge, the 11th such competition.The last one was held in 2008 in Malaga, Spain.
