New regulations for Mexican cement industry
Jose Ponce Sosa, the representative of the Mexican state of Hidalgo in the Secretariat of Labour and Social Security, has said that new legislation will seek to apply 16 of the 41 rules governing the different branches of Mexican cement industry production to cement companies themselves.
The clarification is designed to make inspections easier to carry out, and reduce the number of accidents in the industry. The regulations will be applied on a national scale, though no date has yet been given for it to

Lafarge’s Nigeria-South Africa unit merger approved by shareholders
The merger between the Nigerian unit of French cement maker Lafarge, Lafarge Wapco, and its wholly-owned South African subsidiary has been approved by Lafarge Wapco’s shareholders.
The deal is worth €991.72 million and it will see the combined entity, of which Lafarge group will own 73%, renamed Lafarge Africa Plc and listed on the Nigerian bourse with a market capitalisation of around €2.2 billion.
The merged businesses had 2013 financial year aggregates sales of €991.72 million and EBITDA of €257.84
Claimed antitrust regulator objection to Cemex’s Holcim Spain deal
Europe's antitrust regulator has reportedly objected to Cemex's plan to acquire Holcim's Spanish units, according to person familiar with the matter, denting the Mexican cement producer's hopes of getting EU approval without concessions, Reuters news agency writes.

Italian cement producer Italcementi's CEO Carlo Pesenti said that the company is particularly interested in growth opportunities in the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Talking to the Il Corriere della Sera newspaper in Italy, Pesenti also said that the firm had seen large structural changes during the global economic crisis. Holcim: ‘No takeover of Bamburi Cement’ post Lafarge merger
Holcim says it has no plans to make a takeover offer for Bamburi Cement in Kenya if competition regulators allow its planned near €30 billion merger with Lafarge.

Cemex has opened a new €900,000 production plant near Branne in south west France. The facility will produce concrete for Bordeaux region-based projects, replacing Cemex's other plant in the area, located in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens. Built on a 5,000m² plot, the new plant has a 360tonne granulate storage capacity. As well as its substantial production capacity, the plant has high security and environmental standards. Lafarge Wapco of Nigeria has received shareholders’ approval to merge with Lafarge's operations in South Africa in a move worth €989.54 million. The company will issue 1.4 billion shares and will reportedly spend €146.84 million in cash to takeover Lafarge's South African unit. The new entity will be known as Lafarge Africa and it will be 73% owned by Lafarge. Report claims shortage of quarry reserves in GB is a growing problem
A major new report by industry marketing specialist, BDS Marketing Research claims the quarrying industry has failed to replenish aggregates production for many years with consents for new reserves and that this “is now having a serious impact on the industry.”

HeidelbergCement launches Kazakhstan cement plant
HeidelbergCement has opened its €200 million Caspi cement plant in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region. The facility is expected to produce around 1 million tonnes of cement each year. China-based CDI, part of SINOMA, is the plant’s general contractor and automatic equipment supplier. The Caspi plant is said by HeidelbergCement to be one of the first cement plants offering dry production of clinker using dry chalk stone for grinding. The plant will use raw materials from nearby deposits at Shetpe-Yuzhnoye and Aus
