The triennial major UEPG event is the Sustainable Development Awards Ceremony. UEPG launched the rst European Restoration Award scheme in 1997; in 2005, UEPG enlarged the scope to all aspects of sustainable development with the UEPG Sustainable Development Awards; in 2010, a special award was dedicated to Biodiversity. Aggregates outlook for Scandinavia
Any region comprising four or five important producing countries will do well in the league tables in comparison to its constituent parts, but for the relatively sparsely populated Scandinavia there’s no one to touch its aggregates production per capita. Julie-Anne Ryan reports.
Finland and Norway are untouchable in that particular table, with an average of 16 million tonnes per capita, and Denmark and Sweden are also in the top ten.

Britain’s Hope Construction Materials has invested in a new fleet of quarry machines in partnership with Finning, which has provided a range of new technology to enable Hope to manage the fleet “to achieve maximum productivity, flexibility and fuel efficiency.”

Denmark: bankrupt brickworks acquired by Randers Tegl
Assets and stocks of bankrupt Danish brickworks Lundgaard Teglværk is to be taken over by Randers Tegl by 1 January 2014.
Randers Tegl will make use of the equipment for its investment in Hammershøj Teglværk, which is targeting niche markets where demand is increasing despite the sector's crisis.
Metso and Ferrostaal to boost Mauritania's loading capacity for iron ore
Following an international tender, Metso and the industrial service provider Ferrostaal Industrieanlagen, Germany (Ferrostaal) have been awarded a joint contract to build a railcar dumper facility for the iron ore producer Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière (SNIM) in the harbour of Nouadhibou, Mauritania. The value of the order will not be published.

Russia: Alliance to launch production of concrete in Lipetsk region
Alliance is going to launch production of concrete and dust-pressed tile in the Lipetsk region (Central). The production lines' capacities will be 30-50m2 of tile and 30m2 of concrete per hour. The required investment is estimated at RUB 10 million (€222,129.04) with RUB 1.5 million coming from Alliance's internal funds and the rest will be borrowed.
The company was set up ten months ago.
Kazakhstan: Shymkentcement to invest €58mn in production upgrade
Shymkentcement (a part of Italian Italcementi Group) will invest €58.12 million in upgrading cement production. A line for the dry processing of cement will be launched. The first lot of clinker will be produced by mid-2015.
Russia: VOLMA-Orenburg continues building gypsum plant
VOLMA-Orenburg continues building the gypsum plant in Russia’s central Orenburg region (Volga) with several production facilities, electric power grids, an access road, and a gas pipeline having already been built.
The developer has contracted production equipment suppliers and the equipment is to be supplied between January and May 2014.
The plant is expected to be launched in late 2014 and to reach its design capacity in early 2015. At first, the plant will open up 200 new jobs, and another 800 jobs
France’s Holcim Bétons recognised for concrete project
France's national ready-mix concrete union (SNBPE) presented Holcim Bétons France with the socio-educational and recreational facilities award during the awards ceremony at the Salon des Maires event for its work using Articimo decorative concrete in the Velotte area of Besançon.
Holcim Bétons France used the concrete to create a rest and relaxation area for cyclists with outdoor games, a water source and a shelter.
Russia’s Eurocement Group to process MSW
Eurocement Group is going to process municipal solid waste (MSW) at its plant in Podgorensky community in the Voronezh region (Central). The plant may process 300,000tonnes of MSW/year, which is to be used to make alternative fuel for clinker burning kilns.
Holcim plans Mexican expansion
Swiss cement firm Holcim is planning expansion in Mexico, after its two main markets in Latin America, Mexico and Brazil, started to show signs that demand will recover.
Holcim is said to be looking at developing more plants in Mexico and restarting operations in Peru. Executives at the company are cautiously optimistic about recovery in Mexico at the beginning of 2014.

Holcim France selects train and river transport
During the first half of 2014, Holcim France, specialised in the production of cement, aggregate and concrete, will set up a transport solution that combines rail and river traffic to transport construction materials between quarries in Bayel and the branched terminal installation in Vernou.
ECR, which won the three-year contract, will offer three trains of 1,500-2,500tonnes/week. Once unloaded in Vernou, the materials are then sent to Holcim Bétons by barge.

In addition to a grinding mill order earlier this year, Altay Polimetally has also chosen Metso as the supplier of a complete grinding system for its new copper mine in Kazakhstan. The order value is over €30 million.
Altay Polimetally is targeting production of 3 million tonnes/year, and including host rock, 10 million tonnes. The plant is scheduled to begin operation last quarter 2014. Metso says its solution will ensure that Altay reaches this target.

Credit Suisse Group AG's shareholding in Chinese cement producer China Shanshui Cement Group increased to 5.02%, equivalent to 141.29 million shares after the acquisition of 11.671 million additional shares. The transaction was settled at an average price of HKD 3.40 (€0.32) per share, totalling to HKD 39.66 million.
Italy: Cementir to close down hot area at Taranto plant
Cementir, the Italian cement and construction materials group, has told the unions that it is to close down the hot production area in its Taranto plant by the end of December 2013.
This is largely due to the drop in demand from the construction sector as well as a decrement in supply of slag to Ilva, the local steelmaker whose activity remains also uncertain.

Morocco: Sadet inaugurates new production plant in Tangier
In Morocco, prestressed concrete specialist Sadet has inaugurated its latest production plant.
The 20,000m² site is built on nine hectares of land in Sebt Ezzinate (Tangier) and will produce various concrete products used in the construction industry, including slabs and beams.
The factory represents an overall investment of MAD 263.80 million (€23.50 million). Roughly 60 indirect jobs and 80 direct jobs were created.
Russia: MosBuild 2014 Building & Interiors exhibition to be held in April 2014
Moscow will host MosBuild 2014 Building & Interiors Exhibition in April 2014. The exhibition will have three sectors: Building & Interiors (1-4 April 2014, Expocentre); Fenestration (1-4 April 2014, V.V.C.) and Cersanex (15-18 April 2014, Expocentre).
Building and finishing materials, design services, and design equipment will be exhibited. BASF, TechnoNIOL, Ruukki RUS, AGC Glass Europe, and Kerama Marazzi are on the exhibitor list. The event will host several conferences and a forum.
French tile and brick market expected to drop 5% in 2013
According to Bruno Martinet, the managing director of the French Federation for Tiles and Bricks (or FFTB), the French tile and brick market is expected to drop 5% by late 2013 from turnover of €919 million in 2012 while 2014 is expected to bring a drop of 3% to 5%.
The brick market is mostly concerned with new construction, a segment that is less dynamic than renovation.

Italcementi breaks ground on new Kazakh kiln line
The Italcementi Group has held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new kiln line at its Shymkent Cement in south Kazakhstan.
Plant managing director, Gabriel Morin, said the capacity of the new dry-process cement line would be 1.2million tonnes/year. The project will take 20 months to complete, Kazakhstan General Newswire reported.
