Marshalls’ quarry restoration plans require bespoke permits

Few would argue against the benefits of restoring excavated quarry sites in such a way that it enhances nature conservation. However, the UK Environment Agency took some convincing that a request to import over two million tonnes of infill material was not an excuse to dump waste and effectively use old quarries as landfill sites. Engineering and environmental consultancy Wardell Armstrong used its expertise in waste legislation, planning and permitting to secure bespoke environmental permits for the restor

Germany, Europe’s top aggregates producer continues to lead the way out of the recession

As the top aggregates producer in Europe, Germany is making the most of its strong position to ensure that it continues to lead the way out of the recession. Industry commentators agree that the overall economic prospects still look positive and that the improving employment situation plus favourable financing conditions are helping to incentivise home ownership, which can only be good for Germany’s historically healthy construction market. (Existing buildings, however, still account for more than 75% of th

Mobile Kleemanns crush in Swedish quarry

With an average compressive strength of around 180Mega-Pascals (MPa), granite is one of the hardest rocks on earth. The granite found in the Boda Quarry near Vrigstad, a small town in southern Sweden, even yields values of more than 300MPa in some cases. This imposes particularly high demands when it comes to processing the material. TJ Gräv, a provider of crushing services from Brandstorp, was contracted to process 40,000tonnes of the material, and being already familiar with German manufacturer Kleemann (

Weighing equipment for quarries becomes more innovative

Most quarries use static or dynamic weighing systems to manage the quality of the products they produce. These are used to measure the quantity of material or finished products such as aggregates that are delivered to customers. Established equipment is regularly joined by new state-of-the-art products that make the weighing job easier, quicker and more effective. For example, Finnish company Tamtron has just launched a self-developed and self-manufactured Power wheeled loader scale. The company, which says

Crushing and screening equipment for high quality end products

The requirements for building materials, concrete and asphalt have continuously risen in recent years. This has meant that requirements on the gravel, chippings and sand used in their production have also risen. “Since demand for high grade crushed sand and high quality aggregates is also constantly rising, gravel and aggregate plants have to expand and equip their machine pools in order to meet the European standards and directives that require increased use of high quality aggregates,” says BHS-Sonthofen,

Modern materials and equipment for road construction

Roads, wherever they are, represent major public investment and for this reason are expected to last for a long time. Rapid increases in the number of vehicles and thus a rise in traffic volumes and axle loads produce congestion, wear and tear on structures, along with air pollution and noise emissions. The materials used to construct modern roads, from the sub-base upwards to the asphalt or concrete wear surface have improved vastly over the years, as has the equipment involved. In the Netherlands, Kuiken,
