BAA director asks new UK business secretary to tackle Aggregates Levy
British Aggregates Association director Robert Durward has written to Sajid Javid MP, the new Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills, urging him to take a personal interest in the long-standing issue of the UK Aggregates Levy.
Having replaced Vince Cable as business secretary following the 2015 General Election, Javid has vowed to sweep away at least €14.03 billion (£10 billion) of red tape for companies during this parliament.

Hope Construction Materials, Britain’s leading independent supplier of construction materials, has announced a major investment in rail transportation from its flagship Derbyshire cement operation.
Hope, who supply cement to customers across the UK, is investing over €1.4 million (£1 million) in the manufacture and long-term lease of 48 tailor-made rail wagons for the distribution of cement from its Hope Works, in Hope Valley.

CarbonCure Technologies, a Canadian green technology company serving the concrete sector, has closed a $3 million Series C investment round.
Pangaea Ventures, a world leader in advanced materials venture capital, is said to have led the oversubscribed round. The investment will be used to accelerate sales in the concrete masonry sector, and expand CarbonCure’s CO2 utilisation technology platform into the ready-mixed concrete sector.

Natural stone production specialist Cupa Stone its sixth Spanish distribution centre in Spain. Costing €1 million, the 1,500m² centre in Padron will stock more than 200 of the 500 products the firm manages. It will serve as a showroom for customers and will also have work spaces for its commercial division and management for its own warehouse.
Lafarge CEO Bruno Lafont to get €2.5m LafargeHolcim merger bonus, FT reports
Lafarge CEO Bruno Lafont has been awarded a €2.5m bonus for his efforts to secure the merger deal between the French cement giant and Swiss counterpart Holcim, the London-based Financial Times reports.
The FT quotes Lafarge saying that the bonus was for the "exceptional performance" of Lafont in "extraordinary circumstances". The FT says the bonus represents a significant addition on top of his normal salary and perks, which in 2014 were a reported €1.8 million.

Australian dust-buster’s African debut
Australian fine particle engineering company 88Chemco has launched its dust suppressant in southern Africa, specifically designed for quarry haul roads. Hydrogel is sprayed directly onto haul road surfaces, where the product enhances water’s ability to wet and bind fine particles by up to eight times more than plain water. “Our best result was a client south of Johannesburg, South Africa, who reported that watering of haul roads was reduced to once every 17 hours from the normal two to three-hour intervals,
South Africa’s quarry industry up in arms against borrow pits
The South African quarry industry’s main adversary to its development is illegal mining, but commercial quarry operators deem the establishment of borrow pits as equally damaging, writes Munesu Shoko. Around 103 million tonnes/year of aggregate are produced in South Africa, based on 2012/2013 returns and industry estimates. The country’s Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) says this is a significant increase on the 81 million tonnes/year reported between 2010 and 2011.

Uralita losses up 18.1% in Q1 2015
Spanish building materials firm Uralita’s losses rose by 18.1% to €18.9 million in Q1 2015, compared to the same period of 2014, due to its financing costs rising to €14.6 million. At the same time, the company’s ebitda decreased by 1.9% to €9.1 million and sales totalled €130.3 million after rising by 1.8%. Sales abroad accounted for 76% of all sales, while sales in Spain decreased by 13%. South Africa’s PPC posts 9.2% sales growth, but also lower half-year net income
PPC, South Africa's largest cement manufacturer, recorded 9.2% sales growth to US$377.91 million (ZAR 4.5 billion) in the six months to March 2015. But it wasn’t all good news for the company, as its net income dropped from $7.73 million (ZAR 494 million) to $4.29 million (ZAR 274 million), followed by another decline in earnings per share before one-time items from ZAR 0.96 to ZAR 0.60 on a year-on-year basis.

Lafarge receives bids to acquire two India assets prior to merger with Holcim
Lafarge, the French cement giant, has received seven expressions of interests for the acquisition of two of its assets in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, India ahead of its merger with Switzerland-based Holcim. Lafarge has been directed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to sell its cement plant in Sonadih and a grinding unit in Jojobera to relatively small companies with an installed capacity of at least 5% of their total capacity.
