Environmental Impact Assessments: European Union reviews legislation
In March 2014, the European Parliament approved a Directive revising the EU legislation on Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA). This is an important review for the aggregates industry as many sites have to undergo such an assessment or part of it before obtaining a permit. This is why it was ranked as one of the top priorities for UEPG for over a year.
This review was initiated by the European Commission in October 2012, under the ordinary legislative procedure
Lafarge and Precia Molen partner at Signes site
French construction materials group Lafarge has partnered with weighing instrument specialist Precia Molen to develop a system for the recomposing of aggregates and commercial weighing at the Signes site, with a capacity of 1,500tonnes.

Lafarge/Holcim merger will face competition authorities
There is a feeling in some circles that the news that Holcim and Lafarge plan to merge should not come as a surprise.
I think to many in the industry that it did, given that the scheme was announced on a Friday evening in a short statement from both companies saying they believed that, given the strong complementarity of their portfolio and the cultural proximity between the two companies, there is rationale in considering a potential merger that could deliver significant benefits to customers, employees a
Middle East aggregates growth stimulated by infrastructure development
Compiling a report on the aggregates industry in the Middle East is not easy because defining the countries that make up the region vary. However, in many company reports and trend analyses the region is coupled with Africa because Africa and the Middle East overlap. For example, Egypt or Libya are African countries but they speak the Arabic language and share the Middle Eastern culture.
Almost everyone would agree that the following countries are part of the Middle East: Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Isra

Wirtgen surface miners at work on construction of Qatar port
A total of 50 million m³ of mostly hard rock needed to be removed for construction of the new, ultra-modern deep water seaport in Doha, Qatar.
The project was awarded to China Harbour Construction Company (CHCC) which originally planned to complete the job in a conventional manner using drilling and blasting.
But, due to the economic and ecological advantages of the Wirtgen surface mining technology, CHCC finally decided to use this environmentally friendly process as the optimal method, says Wirtgen.
Oman quarry’s tough conditions suit Volvo
Al Hawathim produces aggregates for use in asphalt, concrete, hollow blocks and interlock from several sites across Oman.
Of these, conditions at its Barka site north-west of Muscat are particularly brutal with high temperatures, strong winds and irrepressible fine dust.
Such a challenging environment is tough on both man and machine, yet the new Volvo L220G wheeled loader is said to be not only mastering the conditions, but doing so while enhancing the environment for the operator.

Martin Engineering’s belt cleaner
Cleaners from Martin Engineering, engineered specifically for rock/aggregate applications, are said to be helping a company reduce costs and improve safety. The series of innovative conveyor belt cleaners help eliminate carryback and the problems it causes. Service crews spend up to two hours/day shovelling and washing down accumulation from beneath the conveyors and by minimising the need for staff to work close to fast-moving belts, the cleaners help diminish the chance of accidents or injury.
