Chicago Pneumatic’s compressor success at blue stone quarries in India’s Navi-Mumbai region
Chicago Pneumatic says it has become the blue stone quarry industry’s leading provider of portable compressors in India’s Navi-Mumbai region.
The company is now believed to supply 80% of the portable compressors in use across the region’s 250 stone quarries.

Energy/transport sectors offer indication of Africa’s growth opportunities
For indication of growth opportunities in Africa and particularly sub-Saharan Africa, look to the energy and transport sectors, and some pockets of economic expansion.
South Africa is naturally still the largest market, with aggregates extraction currently estimated by the Aggregates & Sand Producers Association of South Africa (ASPASA) at about 150 million tonnes/year. Other countries and their major infrastructure projects are developing, however.
Nigeria can now claim the largest cement industry in sub
Huge canal project to move water from south to north China
One of the world’s largest infrastructure projects will require millions, if not billions, of tonnes of concrete.
In China, a variety of quarries and plants are producing the aggregates and cement required to supply concrete for the South-North water transfer scheme, which was started in 2002.
After completion, around 45 billion m³ of water will be diverted annually from the Yangtze River in southern China to the Yellow River Basin in arid northern China through the new canals running for several thou
Kleemann mobile plants crush stone for Rio de Janeiro projects
What may well be the world’s largest mobile crushed stone plant started operation near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013, where gneiss rock is being processed with the aid of mobile crushers from Kleemann. Two of the world’s biggest sporting events, the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, and such mega-events involve immense infrastructure projects such as those of the Brazilian company Tamoio Mineração.
Tamoio is located just a few kilometres fr
New Doosan DX140LC excavator’s on Scottish quarry duty
Scottish company A&L McCrae Contractors has taken delivery of a new Doosan DX140LC 14tonne crawler excavator which has been working in a local quarry. Based in Argyll in the west of the country, the plant was bought from Coatbridge-based Scotia Plant, the authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer for the central belt of Scotland. It is the fifth Doosan excavator supplied by Scotia Plant to be added to the McCrae fleet.
According to A&L McCrae Contractors, the reliability and high productivity of the Doosan exc
Sandvik’s CH550 crusher for NIVET
A new CH550 cone crusher from Sandvik Construction is helping the NIVET TPPL quarry produce a 0-10mm aggregate for use in road construction and civil engineering projects.
Part of the famous NIVET Group of quarrying and construction companies located in the west of France, the TPPL quarry is now able to provide customers with the aggregates they require, and deliver the material when it is needed. Furthermore the quarry has also reported direct operational benefits from the what are said to be the specia
UEPG discusses EU’s political year

Volvo CE machine fleet for Gulf Rock
Every year, three million tonnes of crushed rock is drilled, blasted, transported and sold from a low silica limestone quarry in Fujairah, one of the seven districts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
A relative stone’s throw from the glittering towers and desert oasis of Dubai, Tawiain in Fujairah lies just inland on the Gulf of Oman coastline. The region is dominated by the Hajar mountain range, which reaches up to 1,000m and contains igneous, limestone and metamorphic rocks.
Chinese quarry increasing size of Caterpillar fleet
Chinese quarry producer Beijing Xindadi Equipment Company is looking to increase the size of its Caterpillar machine fleet as part of its plan to increase output.
The company is based at Beijing Miyun Taishi Village and currently produces 1-1.5 million tonnes/year of limestone, which is used for general construction in the Beijing area, writes Mike Woof.
Zhang Guofeng is equipment manager for the firm and said, “Business is good because the market is not affected by the downturn.”
Manufacturers offer solutions for mixing concrete
The formula for making concrete: water, cement and aggregates, seems simple, but concrete manufacture is a complex process. Developing various mixes for concrete requires advanced scientific skills, with the quality of the cement and aggregates and the dosage and proportions just some of the variables that influence the properties of concrete.
Likewise, the equipment for producing concrete has become more sophisticated over the years with precision measurement of the ingredients now standard on most mac
Loading and hauling materials on a global scale
Loading and hauling, however achieved, is an essential part of any quarry or related operation. Getting material from A to B in the shortest time and most cost-effective manner is the key. Saqr Port is the biggest bulk handling port in the Middle Eastern region, handling materials on a global scale.
In the northern Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, it has 12 berths and an in-port draft of up to 12m, and handles vessels up to 260m long. Efficiency and productivity have seen throughput increased by 100% in the p
A variety of tasks for hauling equipment
Hauling is a major part of the biggest public-private partnership (PPP) contract ever signed in France’s rail sector, as Patrick Smith reports. Indeed, the South Europe Atlantic high-speed rail (SEA HSR) that will run for 302km from Tours to Bordeaux is said to be one of the world’s largest infrastructure projects launched over the last decade.
About 400 Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) machines are being used at the SEA HSR development that will pass through a giant chunk of Western France–Centre, Poit
Concrete blocks to build Zambia’s roads
An upswing in new infrastructure worldwide means that demand for aggregates and therefore concrete is also increasing. Housing, non-residential, road, rail and bridges are among projects now under construction in many countries.
Indeed, statistics show that twice as much concrete is used in construction around the world than the total of all other building materials, including wood, steel, plastic and aluminium, and annual production is measured in billions of tonnes.
Reporting from Zambia, Shem Orier
Safety is one of the drivers in aggregate production
Safety, along with productivity and cost-efficiency, is what is driving minerals processing and aggregate production today. Indeed, as raw materials and other resources become scarcer, plants look for new ways to be more efficient with energy use and operations.
Metso and other companies are developing their offering in intelligent processes and service solutions to help customers meet these challenges.
“Safety is a high priority, and having zero accidents is every plant’s goal. Automation removes op
The Clean Air Policy Package – an early Christmas present from the European Commission … (or not)
Before Christmas, the European Commission published a package of proposals aimed at improving quality of Europe’s air, despite concern from across industry. Simon Trahair-Davies of Stephens Scown LLP sets out the proposals with particular reference to a proposal, as part of that package, to introduce a directive on emissions from medium combustion plants.
On the 18 December 2013, the European Commission published its Clean Air P
Eastern European aggregates industry among front-runners
The aggregates industry in Eastern Europe is once again among the front runners in global recovery, writes Julie-Anne Ryan.
Latest figures from recent years vary from country to country depending on individual organisations, but from forecasts showing a worldwide expansion through to 2017 of 5.8% a year to 53.2 billion tonnes, Eastern Europe is expected to register faster growth than many.
