Aggregates giant Lafarge Canada uses biosolids to fuel cement plant

Lafarge Canada has joined forces with Victoria’s Capital Regional District on Vancouver Island to use biosolids as fuel at its Richmond cement plant.

Lafarge's western Canadian Geocycle team received $753,000 from the government of British Columbia's CleanBC Industry Fund for the capital investment in a silo designed to co-process biosolids as low carbon fuel for the Richmond cement kiln.

The company says the silo and its associated systems will receive, store and feed biosolids into the kiln.

World's first building to use carbon-fibre-reinforced concrete is under construction

Construction is underway in Germany on what is claimed to be the world's first building made entirely of carbon-fibre reinforced concrete.

The material that is being used on the project at the Technical University of Dresden is said by the building's architect HENN to enable more durable structures that can save up to 50% in CO2 emissions.

Aggregates and concrete standards body ASTM issues advice on testing fibre-reinforced concrete

ASTM International has proposed a standard to evaluate the tensile performance of fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) using cylindrical specimens with double-punch loading.

Shih-ho Chao, ASTM member and professor of civil engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, says a double-punch test is an indirect tensile test method that shows much less variability and is more time efficient than typical beam-type testing.

LiuGong North America expands dealer network in US

LiuGong North America has appointed five construction equipment dealers to expand its dealer network in the US.

The company says the dealerships will provide the LiuGong and Dressta brands to areas that previously did not have the opportunity to put them to the test.

LiuGong acquired Dressta in 2012 and renamed the manufacturer of heavy construction equipment LiuGong Dressta Machinery.

Malvese Equipment Company, a power equipment distributor from Long Island, now carries the LiuGong and Dressta brands.

Aggregates industry software and technology specialist Command Alkon is combining its resources with software provider Ruckit to remove the need for paper tickets and to speed up invoice reconciliation.

American Concrete Institute to host virtual technology forum in August

The American Concrete Industry (ACI) Foundation’s Strategic Development Council (SDC) has announced it will host its first virtual technology forum from 25-27 August.

The SDC Technology Forum 48 will consist of two separate webinar sessions, which will include four 30-minute presentations. All participants will have the option of requesting a PDH certificate for self-reported credit.

The SDC collaborates across the concrete industry to address technical challenges within the industry and hosts forums for the introduction and nurturing of new technologies.
